For Spring 2004, Chanel took one of the most familiar pieces in the wardrobe and gave it a sharper ‘Chanelized’ identity —

The joke is simple and very Lagerfeld: take a raincoat, give it couture edging, then behave as though nothing unusual happened.

• Chain-link detailing runs through the edging, giving the coat a subtle jewellery quality
