The green of Viñales
West of Havana lies the valley of Viñales, where the world's most famous tobacco grows. Its fields are a deep olive green, dotted with drying barns and royal palms, Cuba's national tree, and beyond the hills the Caribbean turns from teal to emerald along the coast.
On 3 May 2016 Karl Lagerfeld brought Chanel to Cuba, the first great European house ever to show there. The Paseo del Prado became a runway under the trees, vintage American convertibles carried the guests and live Cuban music filled the night. "Cuba is like nothing else in the world," he said. "The colours, the cars, there's something very touching about it." His collection, an idea of a chic and modern Cuba, mixed the island's colours with the house's classics: Panama hats, Coco Cuba T-shirts, guayabera shirt-jackets, and soft, easy knits.
This cardigan carries those colours home: the olive of the tobacco fields, edged with the deep teal of the sea, and buttons that shimmer like the water off the Cuban coast, signed Coco Cuba as if by hand.
