CHANEL · Black & Gold Lesage Tweed Coat with Gripoix Buttons
— Paris–Byzance Métiers d’Art 2011 · Karl Lagerfeld
— Paris–Byzance was built around Chanel’s own fascination with Byzantine-inspired jewellery rather than costume archaeology. Lagerfeld looked to Empress Theodora, Ravenna, mosaic surfaces and, above all, Gabrielle Chanel’s Gripoix vocabulary — then mixed that richness with a much sharper, almost sixties proportion.
// Size mark 40 FR / Condition: never worn //
Crafted from precious Lesage tweed in deepest black, interwoven with fine gold threads that create a dense, almost tessellated shimmer
The surface alternates between matte black yarn and tiny points of metallic light, recalling the gold-washed mosaic effects that informed the collection without turning the coat overtly decorative
HOUSE CODES
Embroidered trim frames the neckline, centre front, cuffs and lower edges, creating a continuous ornamental border
Masterpiece Gripoix CC jewel buttons appear across the front, back and cuffs, functioning less like conventional hardware than miniature objects of jewellery
A CC logo zip closure gives the front a sharper, more modern axis beneath the ornament
Inside, the coat is finished with black silk lining
