Curatorial Description

CHANEL · Burgundy Mosaic Tweed Jacket with Gripoix Buttons
Paris / Byzance Métiers d’Art 2011 · Karl Lagerfeld

  • Ultra-Rare Collectible Runway Piece

Paris–Byzance was one of Lagerfeld’s most concentrated exercises in ornament
The collection drew on Empress Theodora, Byzantine mosaics and, crucially, Gabrielle Chanel’s own love of Byzantine-inspired Gripoix jewellery.

Vogue noted how the season translated that world through gold chains, braiding, jeweled buttons and mosaic embroidery rather than literal historical dress.

// Size mark 44 FR / Condition: never worn //

  • Crafted from precious Lesage tweed in a complex palette of burgundy, oxblood, antique gold, bronze and muted olive

  • The surface is densely hand-worked with an abstract mosaic pattern, creating the effect of tiny tesserae dissolved into textile

  • The colour is deep and warm rather than bright — closer to old garnet, gilded bronze and dark wine than conventional red

  • Masterpiece Gripoix jewel buttons punctuate the front, each one treated almost like a miniature framed object

  • Hand-embroidered metallic trim traces the collar, front, pockets, cuffs and hem

  • Inside, the jacket is finished with tonal silk lining
