CHANEL · Black & Beige Baroque ShimmerCardigan
— Paris / Venice Cruise 2010 · Karl Lagerfeld
For Cruise 2010, Lagerfeld took Chanel back to Venice — one of Gabrielle Chanel’s most important escapes — and built the collection around Lido glamour, gondolier stripes, carnival references, Fortuny, Doge red, gilded lions and the glimmer of light on water. Sarah Mower called it a learned but light invocation of Chanel’s Venetian years, with all the history kept deliberately free of costume.

Crafted from a shimmering black-and-beige knit, with metallic threads worked through the surface
The pattern moves between abstract baroque scrollwork, architectural shadow and softened graphic distortion
Beige and champagne tones emerge through the black base in irregular flashes, giving the cardigan depth rather than obvious contrast
The surface catches light subtly, echoing the collection’s recurring idea of Venetian shimmer and reflection
CC logo buttons with baroque detailing punctuate the front, bringing a small jewellery note to the long knitted silhouette
The pockets sit low on the body, reinforcing the cardigan’s relaxed, elongated proportion
The overall effect is decorative without becoming ornate — the pattern does most of the work
